Eight more libraries offer Stepping UP

Eight more libraries, from Waiheke to Invercargill, have started Stepping UP. They join over 50 libraries and community technology centres already offering Stepping UP – free computer & internet training for adults, in easy steps relevant to their life and interests, in informal, friendly classes.

The 20/20 Trust has partnered with Public Libraries of New Zealand in developing and delivering digital literacy training in public libraries – including Stepping UP – and this is proving fruitful. A number of libraries are also offering Spark Jump workshops.

Public Libraries of New Zealand conference

Sue Kini, 20/20 Trust’s Stepping UP product manager, spoke at the annual conference of Public Libraries of New Zealand, The Association of Public Library Managers, in Rotorua on 5 & 6 April 2017. She met many librarians already participating, and sparked a lot of interest in the others.

“…extremely positive…”

“The response from the library managers was extremely positive.  Libraries are continually evolving and managers are highly aware of the importance of providing digital services to their community”

The new libraries

Libraries who’ve recently become active with Stepping UP are:

  • Greerton Library
  • Stratford District & Centennial Library
  • Taupo Public Library
  • Invercargill Public Library
  • Winton Public Library
  • Otaki Library
  • Waikanae Public Library
  • Waiheke Adult Learning

A perfect location

Sue says libraries are a perfect location for Stepping UP: “Libraries are a safe and comfortable environment for people to learn, and the informal 2-hour sessions fit well.” Other libraries are keen, but not yet quite ready.

“…these are great”

Rotorua District Library Learning Facilitator, Anne Riddle, said in an earlier news article:

“Our customers are loving these classes and regularly compare them with classes that they have taken elsewhere.  They make comments like “these classes are so personal”, “I hate being in large classes – these are great”, “I feel as if I can ask Amanda or Anne anything without feeling stupid”, “I feel empowered” so it’s certainly boosted our confidence”.
